I grew up in a military family, during the Cold War, and Prague was on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain.
What an incredibly beautiful, history filled place. I would love to spend a bunch more time there, if I could figure out when the tourist season wasn’t. The upside – there’s lots of cool stuff to see and do, the food’s fantastic, and the beer even better. The downside is there are tourists and tourist junk shops EVERYWHERE! And the Czechs aren’t the most courteous people I’ve ever run into, at least in the heart of Prague.

At vero eos et accusam
In that moment, surrounded by art and centuries of resilience, I understood what he meant. The city doesn’t just impress—it holds onto you, gently and fiercely, like a memory etched in stone.
Kafka, born in Prague in 1883, walked these same streets with a head full of complex dreams and haunting thoughts. Known for works like The Metamorphosis and The Trial, Kafka captured the surreal beauty and melancholy spirit of his city. Though we only caught glimpses of his life here through the museums and literary plaques, his presence could be felt in the air—like the city was breathing through his words.
When people ask me why I’ve lived in Prague so long (three decades now), I usually say it’s for the culture, but it might actually be for the beer. Czechs drink more beer than anyone else and pride themselves on making the world’s top Pilsner-style lager. (Who am I to disagree?) You’ll find great beer everywhere, but these are my favourite spots for a pint.

Prague gave us more than tourist memories. It gave us a sense of place within something older and greater. The bridge didn’t just carry people from one side of the city to another—it carried generations of love, war, peace, and faith. And now, it carried a part of our story too.
We ended the afternoon at a nearby café, sipping local coffee, talking about what that statue might’ve meant, and smiling at how travel always leaves us a little changed.
Prague is a wonderful city full of contrasts. Whether you want to see historical buildings, hidden parks and gardens or just wander in its narrow streets, you will be amazed by the romantic mood in the air.
